About Us

Background of the Department-

The Post Graduate Teaching Department of Economics, Rashtrasant Tukadoji Maharaj Nagpur University established in the year 1958. It becomes Autonomous from session 2021-22. The Department has grown in leaps and bounds in terms of developing good academic culture and quality research work and through the representation of its faculty members in assignments at State, National and International Level. Initially, the department was nurtured under the leadership of Dr. K. R. Nanekar, Dr. T. M. Joshi and Dr. B. R. Dhekne. They gave identity to the department at the National and International level. Department continued to get the outstanding leadership of Dr. S. A. Deshpande, Dr. (Mrs.) S. S. Sonarikar, Dr. S. L. Lokre, Dr. V. M. Vaidya, Dr. (Mrs.) A. P. Kulkanri and Dr. R. Y. Mahore.

Centre for Regional Development Studies-

The Department is also a recognized Centre for Regional Development Studies by the Government of Maharashtra. Centre for Regional Development Studies has been set up to study and conduct research in the area of regional development studies. The centre actively engages in research activities, organising conferences, seminars and inviting experts in regional development studies. Department aims at providing vital inputs to the governments for achieving balance regional development.

Aims of the Department-

• The Department aims to have holistic development of the students by following a teaching pedagogy that imparts education in tune with the contemporary demands of local, national and International environments.
• The Department aspires for skill development of the students and making them employable in corporate and academic fields.
• The Department strives for developing a strong research base on an individual and departmental level such that the research can be used for providing consultancy on a wide range of socio-economic areas.
• The Department endeavours to be a guiding centre to the teaching fraternity of Economics & assist all in the expansion of the subject knowledge through organizing workshops, Faculty development programs and other constructive initiatives.
• Through the Regional Development Centre, the department aims at organizing programs for studying the varied regional issues in Vidharbha and making suggestions in this regard.
